Board members

The Board currently has 8 members with a mix of skills. These include industry expertise in design, construction and inspection services, law, dispute resolution and mediation skills.

Mel Orange

Chairperson

Mr Mel Orange is a self-employed barrister and business consultant who works in the energy and construction industries.

Mr Orange is the Chair of the Electricity Rulings Panel and a Member of the Electrical Workers Registration Board.

Mr Orange was appointed in 2013. He became Deputy Chair of the Board in 2020 and then became Chair in late 2022.

Faye Pearson-Green

Deputy Chair

Mrs Faye Pearson-Green is an Architectural Designer and a Licensed Building Practitioner (Design 2). She has over 40 years of experience in the industry and has been self-employed since 1996.

Mrs Pearson-Green holds a NZ Certificate in Draughting (Architectural). She is a professional member of Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ) and was previously Chair of the ADNZ Canterbury Westland Branch Executive. She is a National and Regional Judge for the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition.

Mrs Pearson-Green was appointed in 2017 and became Deputy Chair in April 2023.

Faye Pearson Green

Graham Anderson

Mr Graham Anderson has operated his own residential construction business for 27 years and holds carpentry and building foreman qualifications. Mr Anderson is a Licensed Building Practitioner, holding Carpentry and Site 2 licenses.

Mr Anderson is a Member of the Registered Master Builders Association (RMBA). He was previously a Canterbury President and Board member of RMBA and a Judge of the House of the Year Competition.

Mr Anderson is an Associate member of the Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand (AMINZ) and a Chartered Building Professional of the New Zealand Industry Institute of Building (NZIOB).

Mr Anderson was appointed in February 2022.

Graham Anderson

Paul Thompson

Mr Paul Thompson is a qualified Carpenter, Quantity Surveyor and Construction Manager with over 20 years industry experience.

Mr Thompson has worked in multiple Senior Management positions across the building industry and owned and operated several private businesses.

Mr Thompson is a Licensed Building Practitioner (Carpentry and site area of practice 3), Member of the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors and the New Zealand Certified Builders Association.

Mr Thompson was appointed in June 2023.

Paul Thompson

Cory Lang

Mr Cory Lang is a qualified Quantity Surveyor and Building Surveyor with over 15 years industry related experience.

Mr Lang has held a number of management positions in the regulatory environment, currently leading a team of Building Surveyors as the Director of Regulatory Services within a City Council Building Consent Authority.

Mr Lang is a member and past Board Member of the Building Officials Institute of New Zealand (BOINZ) and a member of the Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand (AMINZ).

Elinor Harvey McDouall

Ms Elinor Harvey McDouall is a Registered Architect (since 2004) and has run her award winning regional architectural consultancy for over 10 years.

A member of the NZ Institute of Architects, the Whanganui Earthquake Prone Buildings Taskforce and sitting on the New Zealand Accreditation Standing Panel for the NZ Registered Architects’ Board, Ms McDouall was appointed to the BPB in October 2024.

Suzanne Chetwin

Ms Suzanne Chetwin is a professional director, consumer advocate and barrister and solicitor. She is a director of the Financial Markets Authority and chairs the People, Performance and Remuneration Committee. She is also a member of the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Authority and heads up its Digitalisation Committee. She chairs the Grocery Action Group, advocating for cheaper food for Kiwis. She chairs the Elizabeth Fletcher Foundation, the investment arm for Share My Super, a charity dedicated to helping to alleviate child poverty. She was formerly CEO of Consumer NZ, and a senior editor in NZ newspapers.

Truc Trang

Short-term Appointment October 2024

Truc is a barrister at Riverbank Chambers with experience in civil/commercial litigation and regulatory matters, having worked as a litigator for the Financial Markets Authority and as a Crown prosecutor. He serves as Deputy Chair of both the Social Security Appeal Authority and the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal, bringing experience in regulatory oversight and administrative decision-making to the Building Practitioners Board.
