Applying for a licence in the portal
You can apply for a building practitioner’s licence via the LBP portal. To do this, you will first need to register as a new user, and then apply for a new licence class.
If you have applied for a licence in the past (even if you do not have a current licence), you do not need to register as a new user. You would instead need to request access to the portal. For instructions on how to do this, please visit:

Before you start using the LBP portal
Please make sure you have done the following before registering as a new user and applying for a new licence class:
- Review our factsheets to make sure you understand the competencies you need to meet.
- Decide which application pathway is right for you.
- If you have a New Zealand qualification that is on the list of recognised qualifications in the LBP rules, you can apply using a streamline application.
LBP rules of the Board
Streamline application - If you don’t meet the above qualification requirement, you must apply using a standard application.
Standard application - If you hold an Australian State design or trade-related licence, you may apply using a Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition application (TTMRA) under certain conditions.
Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition application
- If you have a New Zealand qualification that is on the list of recognised qualifications in the LBP rules, you can apply using a streamline application.
- Make sure you have an active RealMe, Microsoft, or Google account and know your username and password. You will need to use this to access the LBP portal.
